A few years ago, in 2021, an outstanding dancer of Triestine origin—who has built his career abroad in pursuit of professional growth and artistic achievement—transformed a significant issue affecting the Italian performing arts into an extraordinary dance gala. Staged to great acclaim first at the Castle of San Giusto and later at the Politeama Rossetti, the production brought to light a challenge that continues to shape the lives of many Italian artists.

The artist is Federico Zeno Bassanese, a principal member of the Magdeburg Ballet, who persuaded the Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia to produce a performance featuring an exceptional group of dancers—all Italian, yet all compelled to pursue their careers abroad. Hence the title, Bodies in Flight (Corpi in fuga), where “flight” is not a choice but a necessity: artists leave Italy to nurture their talent, to receive the high-level training they seek, and, once fully developed, to flourish in an environment that offers meaningful professional opportunities and long-term career prospects.

This phenomenon extends far beyond the world of dance, as demonstrated by productions such as Flight of the Voices(Fuga delle voci), which explored the same issue from a broader artistic perspective.

Today, Federico Zeno Bassanese continues his career with the Magdeburg Ballet and on the international dance scene, surrounded by remarkable artists who long to return and perform “at home.” From this shared desire comes a new gala not to be missed: Around the World with the Stars (Nel mondo con le stelle).
